Martinique and Guadeloupe are French Overseas Departments. Beyond practicing our French, eating too many pain aux raisins and spending a pile of Euros, we saw the striking contrasts with the neighbouring former British colonies.
Our Lesser Antilles journey continues north through the former British colonies of Saint Vincent, Saint Lucia and Dominica. Each island is less than 100 kms from the next. We were surprised at how different each is. Terrain, culture, foods, the people – every country is unique.
We’re island hopping the Lesser Antilles from Barbados northward. Everything seemed so idyllic until we visited Carriacou Island in Grenada. We saw first hand the staggering destruction Hurricane Beryl caused, and how difficult is for people who had little to begin with to put their lives back together.
