Kuala Lumpur

We paid a short visit to Kuala Lumpur (KL), the capital of Malaysia. It consistently ranks as one of the most livable cities in Asia for ex-pats. It is easy to see why. There is a nice mix of colonial, Malay Islamic, and Chinese and Indian-influenced architecture. There is a good transportation network and an ultra-modern business district but the city has not lost its character.

KL is a regional shopping mecca. The shopping malls are massive and prices are good. Despite Malaysia being predominantly Muslim – less than 10% of the people are Christian – Christmas season was in full swing in the malls, with elaborate decorations and non-stop traditional Christmas carols blaring.

The skyline is dominated by the Petronas Twin Towers, until 2004 the tallest buildings in the world. There is an elevator up to the skybridge and to the observation deck on the 86th floor. Security is tight and all visits are tightly controlled. The elevator rides need to be pre-booked. Sunset times get booked out well in advance.

The Batu Caves are an important Hindu shrine and popular tourist destination. The caves are just 13 km outside the city center  and are easy to get to by train. There is a steep climb of 272 multicolored steps to the caves. Views back over the city are very nice. They warn you to beware the mischievous monkeys that roam the caves. You should also beware pickpockets (yes, even in a religious temple!). But for Maria spotting the thief with his hand in George’s “theft-proof” backpack, George’s wallet would have been gone.

KL is also great for foodies. Because of Malaysia’s diverse ethnic mix, the quality and variety of the food, especially street food, are outstanding. Office buildings empty out onto the streets from noon until two. Line-ups for the great street food can be lengthy but well worth the wait.

Next Stop: As we mentioned in our last post, we are currently based in Bangkok. Our periodic side-trips depend a lot on what cheap airfares jump out at us. Stay tuned.
